how to learn a language

i always found language classes boring, and language apps too simple to find any real value.

let's focus on what’s most important to treat this process like a game to play and not a strict regiment - as having fun along the way is the best way to stick with this habit.

(1) vocab - memorize the top frequency words using anki (15 min.)

to speak a language we need words - and the most important words are the top most frequently used words.  enter anki, a flashcard app which uses spaced repetition. anki is brutal - there’s nothing sexy that will reel you in except your own self-discipline. but stick with 20 new words a day and you’ll find the most impactful part of your language learning process.

(2) grammar - using youtube to understand structure (30 min.)

youtube is full of free grammar lessons that can help provide some needed structure.  search how to conjugate verbs in present tense, past tense, future tense, direct / indirect objects, and commands.  watching every video in a playlist isn’t important - instead let your curiosity lead you.

(3) - speaking - journaling in your target language (15 min.)

writing in a diary will connect the words you’ve learned in your brain to building confidence in speaking. set a timer for 10-15 minutes and write. translate words you don’t know.  you’ll make a ton of errors and that’s okay, we’re building muscle memory here not striving for perfection. free write about how your life is going, the people you love, what is bothering you.

more than just a language exercise, you’ll find writing opens a world of reflection and self-growth.

(4) -  understanding - language reactor with netflix (30 min.)

language reactor is a chrome extension where you can watch netflix in one language, and hover your mouse to instantly translate individual words. Take your time and don’t be afraid to pause often.

there is no need to do all four of these back-to-back. in my own life my routine is to wake up and do anki, journal after breakfast, watch grammar videos during my lunch break, and relax at the end of day with netflix.  find the routine that works best for you and don't forget to have fun!
